What do I do?
I do local historical research, including family, house
and neighborhood history. Although many historical and
genealogical resources are now available through the internet,
the majority of records still sit in local
archives, libraries, court houses, and other repositories. If
you can't visit southeastern Wisconsin in person, I can do the
research for you. If you live in this area and own an old house
or building, I can help you find out more about its history. See some examples of recent and ongoing
projects here. (This page is full of graphics. If you have a
slow connection, you can use the site map
to navigate.)
How much do I charge?
In most cases, I charge $25/hour for research, analysis and
report writing, plus expenses (parking, photocopying, mileage,
etc.). We can discuss your specific research goals, and I do ask
that you give me some idea of your budget, so that I can notify
you if I think the work may take more time than expected. I can
also e-mail weekly summaries to let you know what I have
accomplished so far. I will normally ask for a retainer of $50 to
$100, depending on the complexity of the project. This will count
towards my fee, and should the fee come out less than the
retainer the difference will be returned to you. I will do my
best to make sure you get the most for your money.
If you have a simple request like a census, city directory or newspaper look-up, contact me the details and we can discuss a price. You can pay me by check, money order or Pay Pal.
What are my qualifications?
I have a Master's Degree in Public History, and I have
worked for a variety of historical agencies, large and small.
Before becoming a freelance researcher, I was the curator of
Chinqua-Penn Plantation, a house and garden museum in Reidsville,
North Carolina. You can view my
resume here.
